Denis was born on 24 December and baptised on 20 March 1896. His father was Charles Frederick Lloyd, a Shipping Clerk, his mother’s name was Gertrude Ellen Francis Lloyd and their address was given as 4 Glebe Place, Stoke Newington.

On the 1901 census, Denis is 5 years old and shown as still living at 4 Glebe Place. His parents are not mentioned on the census and he is shown as a “boarder”.
By 1911 he is still shown on the census as a Boarder but the address is High School for Boys, Wellesley Road, Croydon.

When Denis enlisted, he gave his address as Sunnyside, Clarendon Grove, Mitcham and his next of kin as his foster mother, Kate Beddoe who may have been his aunt.

Denis joined the London Regiment as a Private. On 19 June 1916 he was shown on the Casualty Lists as “wounded, shock, shell”.
He transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as a Second Lieutenant. He was killed on 22 March 1918 and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial. His aunt, Kate Beddoe applied for his medals but he left his effects, which amounted to £199 14s 3d, to his father who was now an actor.
