Thomas was born in Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk in 1887 to Robert and Edith Mattock. He had three older siblings Frederick, Edith and Florence and his parents went on to have Elizabeth and Frank who both died at just a few months old, Walter, Isaac, another Frank and Jesse.
Thomas was still living in Stoke by Nayland in 1901 but had moved to stay with his aunt and uncle, Edgar and Kate Mattock at 45 Sibthorpe Road, Mitcham by 1911 and was working as a Carman.
He married Violet Spink in 1913 and they had a daughter, Florence Gertrude. They lived at 3 The Terrace, Firework Road, Mitcham according to the 1915 Electoral Register.
Thomas was 28 years old when he enlisted. He was 5ft 7ins tall and weighed 132lb. He joined the East Kent (Buffs) Regiment as a Private.
In August 1917 he was treated for an inflammation of the connective tissue of the feet which required 7 days treatment.
He was killed on 22 September 1918 and commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery Memorial
