William was born in Brixton on 7 October 1893. He had an older brother Archibald and younger brothers John and Thomas. His father Archibald was Scottish and his mother Ellen was Irish but they had settled in south London.
At the time of the 1901 census they were living at 21 Hoyle Road.
The three older boys were christened in All Saints Church, Lambeth on 30 January 1902 and in September 1902 they joined Eardley Road School by which time they were living at 14 Edgington Road.
The family moved again and by 1911 they were living at 17 Marion Road and William was an errand boy for a Grocer’s shop.
He enlisted in Kingston upon Thames and arrived in France on Christmas Eve 1915. He was a Private number 1837 in the 13th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment. Records show that he was wounded on 13 June 1916, had a bout of tonsillitis in May 1917 and was wounded again on 13 September 1917.
William was killed in action on 26 November 1917 and is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial. His father had died by now and his pension went to his mother who was living at 15a Marian Road.
