Ernest and his mother Emily lived at 217 London Road, Mitcham and on 14 September 1914, aged about 17 but standing 5ft 10½ins tall and weighing 136lb, he went to Wimbledon to enlist. William has a fresh complexion, brown hair and blue eyes.
He joined the 8th Battalion of the London Regiment before later transferring to the Royal Fusiliers and being attached to the 19th Manchester regiment.
The 19th were part of the Battle of the Somme and Ernest was posted as “Missing, presumed dead” on 23 July 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial.
