Edward was born on 30 September 1898 in Mitcham, Surrey. His parents were Edward Charles, a “Shoeing Smith” and Ada Louisa and he was the eldest of four siblings.

At the time of the 1901 census, the family were living in West Wickham but they had moved back to Mitcham and were living at 69 Sibthorpe Road by the 1911 census. By this time Edward had three younger sisters, Florence, Phyliss and Violet and the family had a domestic servant, Amelia Cresswell.

Once Edward left school he was employed as a Despatch Clerk.

Edward enlisted in Wimbledon on 2 September 1916. His Attestation was finally approved in February 1917 and he was mobilised. He was a Private number 73587 in the 15th Battalion of the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, The Sherwood Foresters.

He was killed in action of 28 March 1918. Initially reported as “Missing” he was later presumed dead and his name is inscribed on the Pozieres Memorial and in St Mark’s Church Mitcham.
