Sidney was born c. 1892 in Mitcham. His parents, William and Alice lived at 1 Spencer Road in 1901, later moving to 4 Tamworth Park.
Sidney had two older brothers, William and Albert. His father was a gardener and Sidney followed in his footsteps and became an under gardener when he left school.
He enlisted on 9 February 1916 when he was 23 years and 6 months old. He was 5ft 8½ins tall with a 38in chest and weight 142lbs. He joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 8th Battalion, as a Private number 30268 and was posted to Iraq where he died on 16 February 1917. He is buried in the Amara War Cemetery in Iraq.
He does not appear to have married as his pension and war gratuity were paid to his father.
