Victor was born in Battersea in the summer of 1897 and baptised at St Bartholomew’s Church on 18 August 1897.
His parents were George James, a baker, and Rosina. Victor had an older sister, Florence and older brother William and 4 younger siblings, Ernest, Leonard, Lilian and Stanley.
In 1897 the family were living in Battersea at 89 Wickersley Road but by the 1901 census they had moved to 6 Sussex Grove before settling in Mitcham at 58 Marion Road.
Private Victor Ruskin, 3669, enlisted and joined the London Regiment, 2/24 Battalion which saw service in a number of places in England after their formation in 1914. On 29 June 1916 they were mobilised for service overseas and went to France. Victor was killed in action on 1 September 1916 and was buried in the Louez Cemetery, Duisans, Departement du Pas-de-Calais. The inscription on his grave reads “The Lord calleth his own to rest in peace ever living in our hearts”.
Victor’s father died shortly after his death and his pensions were paid to his mother.
