Additional Information

George was Arthur and Rose Sellar’s fourth son. He was born in October 1888 and baptised in St Paul’s Church, Herne Hill on 9 June 1889. His full name at baptism was Gordon Charles Arthur but he did not use the name Charles and most records show him as Gordon Arthur. He and his brothers George, William and Sidney grew up in Herne Hill and George became a shop assistant when he left school.

In the early summer of 1909 he married his sweetheart, Ada Howard, and they lived with his parents at 10 Dulwich Road, Herne Hill. Their daughter Ruby was born in 1910 with Dorothy following on 1 April 1914.
Gordon and Ada and their daughters moved to “Ardley”, St Mark’s Road, Mitcham but on 11 August 1916, Gordon enlisted.

Private Sellar G33328 joined the 7th Battalion of the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex) Regiment. He was 5ft 7ins tall, with a chest measurement of 36ins and an expansion of 3ins and weighed 126lbs.

Gordon was killed in action on 24 April 1918 and is buried in Wanquetin Communual Cemetery Extension, Departement du Pas-de-Calais. His memorial reads
LOVING MEMORY GONE FROM US BUT NOT FORGOTTEN GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN
He is also commemorated in St Mark’s Church, Mitcham where his surname is spelt Seallar.
