Additional Information
David was born c. 1877 in Carshalton. His parents were William and Martha (nee Lovejoy) and he had four older siblings George, Thomas, Florence and William and two younger brothers John and Percy. They grew up at 16 St Johns Road, Little Wrythe Lane, Carshalton.
He married Margaret Killilean in 1914 and they are listed on his pension records as having four children, William, Edward, Florence and Ellen. Baptismal records show William David Slaymaker, son of David and Maggie, as being baptised on 23 February 1908.
David joined the 1st Battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, Private 10420. He was listed as “Wounded and Missing” and later declared dead on 25 April 1915. His body was not recovered and his name is listed on the Menin Gate in Ypres.
At the time of his death his wife was living in Streatham.
I have been unable to find anything to link David Slaymaker to St Mark’s Church, Mitcham, where his name is listed on the memorial but it is an unusual name and this is the only probably combatant from the area.
