Frederick was the fourth child of Frederick William Smith and Mary Catherine nee Fairbrass. Frederick snr was a Packer and later became a Foreman at a tent and tarpaulin factory and Frederick Jnr was born in Bermondsey and was baptised on 31 May 1891 in St Paul’s Church, Southwark.
Frederick and his family, including elder sisters Ada, Lily and Mabel, and younger sisters Alice and Edith were all living in Brixton at the time of the 1901 census but by 1911 Ada, Mabel and Frederick were the only older ones still at home, but they had been joined by another two little sisters, Gladys and Edith. Their address was now 52 Melrose Avenue, Mitcham.
Frederick signed up and joined the 8th Battalion of the East Kent Buffs. He was killed in action and his body was not found so he is listed as “presumed dead” on 26 September 1915. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial in the Dud Corner Cemetery and in St Mark’s Church, Mitcham.
