Additional Information
George was baptised on 4 March 1894 and his parents’ names were given as Joseph and Sarah of Bond Lane Mitcham.
In the census of 1901, Sarah was shown as head of the household. She gave her profession as a Flower Hawker and the family were living at 2 Wood Cottages, Bond Road, Mitcham. On census night there were a number of people in the house – her children John, Joseph, Arthur, George and Charles plus a boarder Charles Baker and a visitor Rosa Bush with her two month old daughter Mary Ann.
By the 1911 census, Sarah is shown as Sarah Cullip, living with her husband George Cullip. It states that they had been married for 32 years and had ten children, eight of whom were still living. It also says that five of her children were in the home that night – Jack Taylor, Joe Taylor, Arthur Taylor, George Taylor and Charlie Taylor. They are all farm labourers and the family is now living at 5 Queens Road, Mitcham.
Very little is known about George. He enlisted in Kingston on Thames and joined the 1st Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment.
He was killed in action on the Somme on 28 July 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial and in St Mark’s Church, Mitcham.
