Additional Information

Charles was born in Lambeth. We know nothing about his early life except that his mother’s initial was M and she was his only surviving parent by the time he enlisted into the 7th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment.

He was 19 years and 7 months old when he enlisted at Kingston on Thames and worked as a butcher. He was 5 ft 5½inches tall, weighed 130lbs and had blue eyes and brown hair.

We know he was wounded in October 1915 which allowed him to wear a wounded stripe on his arm, but he was killed in action on The Somme on 13 August 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. His effects and pension were sent to his mother at The Causeway, Cricket Green, Mitcham.
