Additional Information
George and his family were all born in Mitcham though they moved house quite regularly. His father, also George, worked as a gas stoker and he married Mercy in 1894. His eldest son, George Edward, was born a year later. George was baptised in the Mitcham Parish Church on 17 February 1895 and the family were living at 15 Fountain Place, Mitcham.
By the 1901 census, Charles and Caroline had been born and they were living at 28 Gladstone Road, Mitcham. Ten years later at the 1911 census, Arthur had come along and the four children, their parents and Mercy’s mother were all living at 6 Carew Road in Mitcham. By then George Jnr was 16 and working as a gas fitter/labourer.
George enlisted and joined the 1st Battalion of the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment. He was killed in action on 23 April 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial and in St Mark’s Church, Mitcham.
