Alfred was born in Mitcham but by 1901 the family had moved to Camberwell then had a further move to Balham by the 1911 census. His parents were Thomas and Emma and he had siblings Phyllis, Arthur and Cyril.
Alfred signed a Short Term Attestation at Stratford on 9 September 1914 when he was 28 years old and employed as a Railway Fireman. Although he was initially a Private, he was made Lance Corporal within a few weeks on 3 November 1914. He joined the 8th Battalion of the Queens Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment. He was just under 5ft 5ins tall, weighed 142lbs with a sallow complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
He was killed in action on 26 September 1914 by which time his mother was living in Fernlea Road, Mitcham.
He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial and in St Mark’s Church, Mitcham.
