Walter was born in Mitcham and lived with his family at Ralph Cottage, Grove Road, Mitcham. He was baptised on 6 March 1892 in St Peter and St Paul Church in Mitcham.
His father, Alfred, was a gardener and his mother’s name was Emma. They had seven sons – Alfred, William, Walter, George, Frederick, Bertie and Leonard plus two other children who had died young. By the 1911 census all were still at home except Alfred, the eldest. Walter, who was now 19, had become a gas fitter.
Walter enlisted in Chelsea and joined the Royal Army Medical Corps as a Private. He died of wounds on 23 March 1918 and is buried in Bac-du-Sud British Cemetery, Bailleulval and commemorated in St Mark’s Church, Mitcham.
