Richard was born c. 1888 but nothing can be found about his early life.
He married Ada Elizabeth Parker in October 1909 and their first child, Rose, was born in July 1910. Regretfully, she died the following March, aged just 8 months old.
At the 1911 census, Richard and Ada were living at 8 Prussia Place, Mitcham and Ada’s mother, also Ada, and her two younger sisters, Violet and Lily, were boarding with them. Richard’s occupation is shown as a Carman at the Gas Works.
In 1912, Richard and Ada’s daughter Elsie was born and baptised in St Peter and St Paul Church, Mitcham. By then they were living at 18 Fountain Place.
Richard enlisted in Wimbledon and was a Private in the 9th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment.
He was killed in action on 24 July 1917 and is buried at Ypres. His name can be found on the War Memorial in St Mark’s Church, Mitcham.
