George came from a large family as Walter and Martha, his parents, had nine children, though two of them died young. Walter was a Police Officer in the Metropolitan Police and the family lived in Whitechapel. George was baptised in St Mary’s Whitechapel on 22 May 1898.
By the time of the 1911 census the family had moved to 3 Colwyn Cottages, Fernlea Road, Mitcham and Walter was now a Station Sergeant with the Police. The children who were living with them were Walter Jnr, an apprentice in the Printing Trade, and George, Mary and Albert who were still at school.
George enlisted at Kennington and was a Private in the London Regiment. He was sent abroad as part of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force but was injured in Syria on 6 January 1918 and sadly died of his wounds. He was buried in Israel and is commemorated in St Mark’s Church, Mitcham.
