Additional Information
Joseph and Harriet Wyatt had a large family. Despite the sad loss of four children by 1911, there were still five living at home when the census was taken. Joseph was a labourer at a market garden and James, his third child, was a general labourer. James’s younger siblings ranged from Daisy, aged 23 who worked in a factory, through Ada and Hilda to Harry who was just 10.
The family lived in Allen’s Cottages, Ebenezer Terrace near Eastfields in Mitcham. This was the address given when James and his older siblings Alice and John were all baptized on 8 October 1886 in Immanuel Church, Streatham, and they were still there in 1911 at census time.
James enlisted in Mitcham and joined the 1st Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment as a Private. On some documents his regimental number is given as 30762 and on others as 30763.
He was killed in action on 8 January 1917 and his pension went to his mother which indicates that he was still single and that his father may have died.
He is commemorated in St Mark’s Church, Mitcham
