William Henry was the first son of Ellen Elizabeth James and Charles Steven Hyrons. His parents had married on the 4th November 1899 at St John’s Church in Newington. At the time of their marriage, 42-year-old Ellen Elizabeth James was a widow, employed as a machinist, the bride was given away by her father George Stanley who was employed as a fish monger. Thirty 0ne year-old Charles Stephen was employed as a tile maker.

The 1901 Census reveals that the Hyrons family resided at 45 Sandover Road in Camberwell with his brother Albert who was employed as a beer bottler.

By 1911, the Hyrons family had moved to 14 Pitcairn Road in Mitcham, Surrey, Ellen Elizabeth, and Charles had been married for 20 years and had only their 2 children, 18 year-old William Henry and 15 year-old Alfred who was employed as a shipping clerk. Their 43-year-old, father, Charles employed as a night watchman. The Electoral Register for 1912, describes 14 Pitcairn Road as 3 unfurnished rooms on the top floor which the Hyrons family rented at 6s per week from their landlord, Mr West who lived at the same address.

The 1915 Electoral register reveals that William Henry was living and renting a furnished one room flat at 60 Ashbourne Road, where his father was the landlord.

William Henry’s service record is not available through Ancestry, he enlisted in London in the Royal Artillery, rising to the rank of sergeant before he was killed in action in France on the 24th May 1916. He was buried at the Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery.
