Peter Francis was the seventh child of Elizabeth and Peter Lawton, his parents who were both Irish had migrated to England, where his father Peter was employed as a police constable according to the 1891 Census.

Peter Francis was born on the 7th of April 1893. The Lawton family resided at 6 Bensham Lane according to the Census of 1901 reveals that his father Peter had risen to the rank of Metropolitan police sergeant.

In 1910, Peter was serving as a 17 year old boy aboard Victory 1 for 4 months from the 18th May 1910 to the 19th August. Records describe Peter as being 6ft tall a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair, his occupation was described as that of a draper’s assistant.

Although Peter was not listed on the 1911 Census, this places the Lawton family as residing at 28 Windmill Road in Croydon. His father Peter was now a police pensioner, who had been married to Elizabeth for 29 years and out of their 9 children, eight had survived as adults.

Peter Francis service record is not available through Ancestry He enlisted in the Irish Guards and was killed in action on the 18th May 1915.

Electoral rolls places the Lawton family as residing at 1 Grand Parade, Streatham Road, Mitcham in Surrey.
