Alfred James was the second child of Georgina and George Leslie; he was born in Kennington London during January 1893. His father George was employed as a decorator’s labourer. Baptismal records for Georgina and Georges’ eldest four children reveal that in 1888 that the Leslie family resided at 24 Doris Street in Lambeth.

The 1901 Census records the Leslie family had moved to 31 Motley Street in Battersea.

The 1911 Census reveals that the Leslie family resided at 192 Mellison Road in Tooting, and that his father George had been widowed. Fifty-six-year-old George had been married for 28 years and had a total of 6 children who had all survived unto adulthood. Alfred Leslie was now 15 years old and employed as a baker’s assistant at a local bakery.

Alfred’s elder sister Rosa married Alfred Wilson on 19th 0ctober 1912 at Christ Church in Mitcham. The marriage certificate reveals that George Leslie, her father was now deceased.

Alfred enlisted into the Royal Welch Fusiliers at the age of 22 years and 3 months on the 21st of April 1915 at Camberwell, his service record states that he resided at 14a Tynemouth Road in Mitcham.

Alfred was posted to the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 23rd of December 1915. 0n the 23rd 0ctober 1916, his service record reveals that he was serving with the 113th French Mortar Battery where he was killed in action while attached to the 113th French mortar company on the 1st of August 1917. He is remembered at Dozingham Military Cemetery
