Additional Information

Albert George Clack was born in Wimbledon in 1892, the son of Albert Walter Clack – a carman for the local borough council – and his wife Rosa Maria Clack. He was the eldest of six children. In 1911, when Albert was 18, the family was living at 40, Durnsford Road, Wimbledon. Albert was single, still living at home and working as a greengrocer. His father was a carman.

On the outbreak of war Albert enlisted in New Malden as a private in the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (London Regiment). His service number was G/2654. The 2nd Battalion had been stationed at Calcutta but had returned to England and moved to Nuneaton to join the 86th Brigade of the 29th Division. In March 1915 the battalion mobilised for war and embarked for Gallipoli at Avonmouth via Alexandria and Lemnos. On 25th April it landed at Gallipoli and was engaged in actions at the battles for Krithia and the Achi Baba heights on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

Private Clack was killed in action on 28th May 1915. He was 23 years old. He is commemorated at the Helles Memorial Panel 38 to 42 or 328. The Helles Memorial in Turkey contains the names of certain sailors, soldiers and marines from the United Kingdom, Australia and India, who fell in the Gallipoli campaign and have no known graves
