There is very little information available about Douglas’s early life but would appear that his surname was Bernhard although it is spelt Bernard on the memorial in St Luke’s Church.
Douglas enlisted in Westminster and joined the 1st/16th County of London Battalion (Queen’s Westminster Rifles) as a Rifleman number 56801.
He was killed in action on 16 August 1917 aged 24. On the listing of “Soldiers who Died in the Great War” he is shown as having lived in Wimbledon Park. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Panel 54 and in St Luke’s Church.
