Additional Information
Thomas was born in Kensington on 24 February 1883. His father, Robert, was a coachman; his mother’s name was Mary Ann and he had an elder sister Edith who, by the 1891 census, was a general servant.
When Thomas was 15 he joined the Navy. By the 1901 census he was in Malta on the ‘Royal Sovereign’ and in 1911 he was on ship but docked at Portland in Dorset on census night.
On the night of 31 May 1916, Thomas was serving as a Petty Officer on HMS ‘Black Prince’ when they and one sister ship were separated from their companions in the dark and stumbled on the entire German battle line. They were blown to pieces with the loss of the entire crew.
By now, Thomas’s mother was living in Wimbledon Park at 28 Kingcliffe Gardens and she received his effects which amounted to £130 11s 1d.
He is commemorated in St Luke’s Church, Wimbledon Park and on the Portsmouth Naval memorial.
