John was born in Clapham during August 1892. He was the only child of John Prier Cass, a Retail Salesman, and his wife Irene Gertrude Cass.
In 1901 the family were living in St John’s Terrace, West Ham but by 1911 they had moved to 36 Stuart Road, Wimbledon Park. Later, after John’s death his parents moved to 40 Revelstoke Road.
In 1911 John’s occupation was shown on the census as Stock Broker’s Clerk, later becoming a Bank Clerk.
John was 23 years and 3 months old when he enlisted as a private in the Honourable Artillery Co (Infantry). He was 5ft 5ins tall, with a 33ins chest and an expansion of 3ins. He enlisted on 27 November 1915 but was not mobilised until 2 February 1916 and was sent to France on 2 October 1916.
Parts of his service papers still exist but they do not give a great deal of information about him or his brief military career. John was killed in action on 13 January 1917 and is commemorated in the Ancre British Cemetery in Beaumont-Hamel and in St Luke’s Church, Wimbledon Park.
