Percy George who was born during the last quarter of 1892 in Battersea. His father John Roe, a glass painter by occupation had married Hannah Habberfield during the second quarter of 1873 at St Pancras Registry 0ffice in London. According to the 1891Census Hannah and John and their 5 children lived at 51 St Luke’s Row in Clapham.

Percy George who was baptised on the 14th of June 1893 with his sister Mabel Gertrude at St Bartholomew’s Church in Battersea, at the time of their baptism, the Roe family lived at 11 Bennett Road.

By 1901, the Roe family had moved to 67 Cathles Road in Wandsworth, according to the Census.

The1911 Census reveals that 18-year-old Percy was employed as a compositor in the printing trade still living at home with his parents and his 15-year-old sister Grace. His parents, Hannah and John had been married for 37 years and had a total of 9 children although 2 of their children had passed away.

At the age of 21 years in 1914, on the 1st of September when war was declared, Percy enlisted in the East Surrey Regiment at Kingston upon Thames, his service record reveals that he was 5ft and 71/4 inches tall with a fresh complexion, fair hair and with grey eyes.

Percy’s enlistment records reveal that by 1914, his father John had died and that his mother 64-year-old Hannah was living at 18 Grenfell Road in Mitcham with his youngest sister Grace.

Percy was killed in action on the 14th of 0ctober 1915, he is remembered at the Loos Memorial in France because he has no known grave.
