Henry was born in Barnet in 1887, the eldest child of George, a Groom, and Ellen Edwards. He grew up in Clapham with his younger siblings Florence, Gertrude and Frederick. By the 1911 census, his father had died and the family were living at 24 Grafton Square Clapham. Frederick was a Printers’ Manager.
He married Beatrice Norris Thame on 3 August 1915 in St Stephen’s Church in Clapham. At that time Henry was living at 19 Grove Road, Balham but in due course he and Beatrice moved to 18 Wellington Road, Wimbledon Park and had a daughter Peggy Beatrice.
Henry enlisted in Battersea and joined the Royal Field Artillery as a Driver. He died of wounds aged 31 on 7 July 1918 and is buried at the Bac-du-Sud British Cemetery, Bailleuval 11.E.15. His gravestone is inscribed “Thro’ lonely hours we still are one in spite of change and time”. He is also commemorated in St Luke’s Church, Wimbledon Park.
