Walter Henry was born in Pimlico on 13 February 1884 to Alfred and Emma Newby. He had older siblings Charles, William and Jenny (Jane) and a younger brother, Percy. He was baptised in St Michael’s Church, Chester Square, Pimlico and attended St Michael’s School from 8 January 1894. When he started school, the family were living at 44 Sussex Square, Pimlico.

Walter married Beatrice Mary Tuthill on 11 October 1909, the Banns having been read on 26 September and 3 and 10 October 1909 at St Luke’s Church, Battersea. By the 1911 census, they had a 3 month old daughter, Marjorie, and were living in Chatto Road, Clapham Common. Walter was a Railway Guard.

They moved to Canada where their son, Henry Walter Newby was born on 26 January 1915. By then they were living at 7 Balfour Avenue, Toronto and Walter was an engineer.

Copies of Walter’s Attestation papers signed on 25 March 1916 are available. They show his occupation as a Caretaker and his address as 122 Chester Avenue, Toronto. He was 5ft 9.5ins tall with a fair complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair and a girth of 35ins and gave his religion as CofE.

He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force as a Private, service number 237258, and was killed in action at Passchendaele on 6 November 1917. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate and in St Luke’s Church, Wimbledon Park. He left the sum of £3 and the probate document, which is dated 10 July 1919, gives an address of 460 Jones Avenue, Toronto
