Frederick was born c. 1880 and grew up in Wandsworth. His father was Charles, a Railway Clerk and his mother’s name was Emily (nee Hazeldine). It was a large family with siblings William, Emily, Kate Eliza, Edith, Eleanor, Amy, Maggie (died young) and Minnie. His mother died in 1900 and his father presumably remarried as he went on to have a further child, Frederick’s half sister Winifred.
At the 1901 census the family were still in Wandsworth and Frederick was a Mercantile Clerk.
Frederick married Carrie Lucy Isabel Creary on 3 September 1904 in St May Magdalene Church, Wandsworth Common. They had four children, Frederick, Thomas, Brian and Olive and lived at 9 Alverstone Avenue in Wimbledon Park. The 1911 census shows that Frederick Snr was an Insurance Clerk.
Frederick enlisted at Kingston on Thames as a Private and initially joined the Royal Fusiliers, later transferring to the 12th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment.
He was killed at Passchendaele on 10 August 1918 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. The Register of Effects states “assumed dead”
