William was born in Northamptonshire on 12 August 1877. He was the fifth child of Daniel (1844-1889) and Mary nee Wentworth. His older siblings were Harry (1867-1882), Ellen, Jane and Charlotte and his parents went on to have May, Mary, Daniel and another Harry.
They grew up in the Rose and Crown on The Green at Spratton, Brixworth District in Northamptonshire.
He married Constance on 22 December 1907 at St Michael Paternoster Royal in the City of London. He earned his living as a joiner and he and Constance had two children, Evelyn, who was baptised in 1908 and Cyril who was baptised in 1910.
William enlisted as a Private in Wandsworth and joined the 2nd/6th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment. He was later promoted to Lance Corporal and died of his wounds on 26 March 1918 aged 39. He is buried in the St Sever Cemetery Extension in Rouen and commemorated in St Luke’s Church Wimbledon Park. The inscription on his gravestone reads “Thy will be done”.
