Additional Information
Horace was born on 18 October 1884 in Islington, London. John, his father, ran a Laundry and he and his wife, Virtue, known as Eleanor, had a total of six children, Albert, Ethel, William, Horace, Eleanor and Reginald. By the 1911 census the family were living in a six room house in Elsenham Street, Wandsworth, though only Horace and Reginald were home with their parents when census was taken. The electoral roll for the same year states that Horace was living in a top floor, one bedroom flat at this address.
Horace married Laurie Castell on 21 October 1911 at St Barnabas Church in Clapham Common and their son Phillip was baptised there on 23 November 1913. Sadly, Laurie died either giving birth or shortly afterwards and Phillip only lived until 1918.
At the time of Phillip’s baptism, Horace was living at 110 Kingston Road, Merton Park.
In 1915 Horace married Daisy Napier Castell. Daisy is not Laurie’s sister and a connection has not been found. They had one daughter, Mary who was born in December 1916.
Horace enlisted on 21 September 1916 at Wimbledon, aged 31. He was 5ft 4ins tall, weighed 120lbs and his occupation is shown as Manager. He joined the East Surrey Regiment as Private 34064 but later transferred to 1st City of London Battalion, Royal Fusiliers 228201.
He was killed in action on 11 October 1918 and is buried in St Aubert British Cemetery. He is also commemorated in St Luke’s Church, Wimbledon Park and his wife was living at 132 Melrose Avenue at the time of his death.
