Alfred was born in Dulwich on 17 May 1894. His parents, Alfred George Mabey and Louisa (nee Capron) had eleven children – Ethel, Alfred, Harold, Reginald, Leonard, Leslie, Horace, Stanley and Percy and two who died young. Alfred Snr was a representative for a Tea Company.
At the 1901 census the family were living at 7 Silvester Road and Alfred Jnr joined Heber Road School on 26 August 1901.
By the census in 1911, the family had moved to 69 Ravensbury Road, Earlsfield and Alfred had left school and become a messenger boy.
Alfred enlisted and joined the 2nd Battalion of the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) as Private no. 3238. He fought in the Battle of the Somme and was one of the many killed whose bodies could not be recovered. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial and in St Luke’s Church, Wimbledon Park.
