Additional Information
Stanley was born in Folkestone on 18 February 1890. By the time of the 1901 census, his father, Frederick, had died and his mother, Jane (nee Maslin) was running a boarding house in Folkestone where Stanley lived along with his two younger siblings Arthur and John.
Jane married John Bird and the family moved to 33 Lithos Road, Hampstead. Stanley was now 21 and earned his living as a carpet salesman.
He married Alice Turnbull in Fulham in 1915.
Stanley joined up as a Private but worked his way up to 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (East Kent) Regiment. He was killed in action on 3 March 1917 and is buried in the Maroc British Cemetery. After his death his wife went to live in Cape Province South Africa.
There is no apparent connection with St Luke’s Church in Wimbledon Park but his name appears on the memorial and he is the only Stanley Major who can be traced to the East Kent Regiment.
Stanley’s younger brother Arthur emigrated to Australia in 1914 but returned to fight with the Australian Imperial Force and was killed in 1915.
