John Bowack was born in India on 23 September 1894.
His parents, James and Ellen were both born in Antwerp and they brought John, and his two older sisters Olive and Winifred, to England when John was quite young. By the 1901 census the children and their mother were living in Camberwell.
John attended Ivydale Road School from 25 August 1902 until 16 November 1903.
By the 1911 census, James had joined his family and John was living with his parents in Clerkenwell. His sisters, who were 13 and 10 years older than him, had left home. John was now 16 and working as a Junior Clerk with Peak Freans Biscuit Company.
He joined the 1/9th (City of London) Battalion of the Queen Victoria Rifles as a Gunner and was discharged, injured, on 31 March 1916. His address at this time was given as 208 Croxted Road, West Dulwich. He was admitted into the 4th London General Hospital and died there on 3 July 1916.
He left his savings of £201 0s 1d to his mother.
He is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery.
