Charles was born in Southwark on 29 November 1884. He grew up in the area where his father, also Charles, was a Carman. His mother’s name was Elizabeth nee Pidgley.
Charles married Blanche Louise Alice Wate on 25 December 1907 and they had three children, Charles, Alice and Jane. At the 1911 census they were living at 73 Tower Street, Southwark and Charles was a painter/builder.
Charles’s attestation took place on 24 September 1914 while the family were living at 4 Wootton Street, Lambeth. He was not called for service until 19 March 1915. He was 5ft 6.6ins tall with a pale complexion and brown eyes and hair. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion Royal Naval Division but never saw active service. He died of an accident whilst under anesthetic at the Croydon General Hospital, undergoing an operation for varicose veins.
Charles is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery.
His wife, Blanche, later remarried a Mr Smith and went to live at 7 Hayles Street, Southwark.
