William was born on 28 January 1899 and baptized on 17 November 1899 in St Andrew’s Church, Battersea. His parents, Samuel and Susan (nee Vincent), had a large family and William was the youngest. His siblings were called Charlotte, Henry, Harry, George, Lucy and Rose, plus Charles and Samuel who both died young.
From July 1902 William attended New Road School, moving to Sleaford Street School in November 1906.
At the 1901 census, the family were living in Darkwood Road Battersea but had moved to 69 Rollo Street Battersea by the 1911 census. By 1911 only Rose and William were still at home with their parents. Samuel was a labourer, Susan a Charwoman and Susan’s mother, Mary Ann Wheeler, was also with them.
William enlisted in the 1st Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment as a Private but died of influenza on 9 November 1918 in Wharncliffe War Hospital, Wortley, West Yorkshire.
He is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery. At the time of his death his parents were living at 125 Battersea Park Road.
