Additional Information

George was born in Lambeth on 21 November 1888. His parents, James, a labourer, and Lucy Emma (nee Cheeseman) had four children. Albert died aged only 5 in 1889 but by the 1891 census, James Jnr was 2, George was 2 and their younger sister Kate was just 2 weeks old.
On 15 February 1892, George started at Walnut Tree School.
George’s father died in 1896 and the family moved to Katherine Street, Westminster by the 1901 census. Ten years later, George was one of four people boarding at 63 Gillingham Street, Victoria with Mrs Eliza Ford and her two daughters. On 23 July 1911, George married Mrs Ford’s elder daughter, Rosina, at the Parish Church of St Peter, Pimlico. George was now working in a restaurant as an oysterman.
George and Rosina had one son, Harold Frederick who was born on 19 May 1912.
Very little information is available about George’s military career. He was a Private in the Royal Army Service Corps and had returned home 33 Arlesford Road, Stockwell by the time he died on 2 April 1919. He was considered a casualty of war and his grave, in Streatham Park Cemetery, is cared for by the CWGC.
