Leonard was the fourth child of William and Julia Moat nee Philpott. He had older siblings Emily, William and Ethelbert and young brothers and sisters – Agnes, Frederick, Arthur, Walter, George, Gertrude and Arthur. When he was born his father was a Publican but he later became a Coachman. Leonard was baptised on 23 February 1879 in Great Mongeham, Kent.
Leornard and his brothers and sisters were all born in Soulden, Deal in Kent.
When Leonard was 14, on 6 March 1893, he enlisted in the Royal Marines and went to live and work in Harwich.
He married Lydia Minnie Brockman on 22 May 1915 in the Parish Church of James’s, West Hampsted and their only daughter, Ruby Irene, was born shortly after on 10 June 1915.
Leonard was killed in an accident at work on 24 July 1915 and is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery.
Lydia married a man named Ellender and lived in Great Mongeham, Deal, Kent.
