Additional Information
Frank was born in London in September 1895 and he, and his brother Charles, were both baptised on 15 April 1896 in St Peter’s Church, Vauxhall. Their father, also Charles, was a Miller. Their mother’s name was Louisa and Frank and Charles had two younger siblings, Frederick and Doris.
Frank was an apprentice at Hodgkins Ltd from May 1910, working as a dyer and cleaner, and at the 1911 census the family were living at 37 Newport Street, Lambeth. His father was now a Car man.
Frank joined the Army aged just 17 years and 4 months in January 1913. He was 5ft 5ins tall with good vision and physical development. On 23 January 1913 he was certified as fit to join the 7th Battalion (City of London) London Regiment.
He spent the first two years of his service at home but was sent to France with the Expeditionary Force on 17 March 1915. He was injured in his right thigh on 25 September 1915 and was sent home to recover on 16 October 1915. The following year, on 31 August, he was formally discharged “no longer physically fit for war service”.
Frank died in Epsom on 3 May 1920. At this time his mother was living at 2 Savona Place, Battersea SW8. He is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery.
