Ernest was the younger of two boys born to Emma Frost and her husband James, They were born in Essex and had a younger sister, Eva. At the 1901 census they were living in Prittlewell, Essex.
Ernest became a painter decorator when he left school and he married Edith Louise Newton on 3 September 1913. They had a daughter called Olive Amy who was born 30 March 1914.
Ernest originally joined the Grenadier Guards when he was 18 in 1906. He signed up for three years and was described as 5ft 8.75ins tall, 160lbs and of good physical development. Following his discharge on 25 September 1909 he returned to being a painter/decorator and was transferred to the Army Reserve. He was called up at the start of the war and was sent to France with the Expeditionary Force in 1914.
Despite several severe reprimands for such things a gambling, he worked his way up through the ranks to Sergeant and was awarded the Military Medal, listed in the London Gazette of 11 February 1919.
Ernest received several wounds during his time in the Grenadier Guards but he served throughout the war and finally demobbed in March 1920.
He died at home, 38 Caithness Road, Mitcham, on 8/9 March 1921 (documents give both dates) from ailments aggravated by active service. He is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery.
