William was born on 11 December 1886 and baptised in St John’s Church, Horsleydown on 5 October 1887. His parents John Thomas Grundy and Sarah Ann (nee Sharr) also had a daughter two years after Wiliam’s birth and called her Sarah.
William went to Fair Street School from the age of 5 and the family lived at 4 Finnimore Street, Horsleydown, Southwark. His father John was a Leather Dyer according to the 1891 census.
William married Constance Grimes Pile on 27 March 1910. He was a tea taster and they lived at 27 Dover Buildings, Old Kent Road. Their daughter Emma Amelia was born on 20 September 1916.
William joined the 11th Battalion of the London Regiment (Finsbury Rifles) and died at home on 22 February 1921. He is buried in Streatham Park cemetery.
