Francis Edward Hancock was born 2 October 1896 and was named after his father, also Francis Edward. His mother’s name was Alice Ellen Hancock (nee Watts). Baby Francis was baptised on 29 November 1896 at St Dionis Church in Parsons Green.
Francis Snr was a Stable Man at 1891 census but went on to become a fishmonger and a Carman. The family lived in Lambeth.
Francis Jnr had two younger sisters, Alice and Violet, and by 1911 they were all living in Herne Hill and he had a job as a messenger.
Francis enlisted into the Royal Engineers and served with the 57th Anti-Aircraft Searchlight Battalion until his discharge .
He died on 2 March 1919 in the London G A Hospital, Camberwell and is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery. His father received his gratuity of £21 9s 9d. Frances Snr died in 1921 and he and Alice were living in Shakespear Road, Herne Hill at the time of his death.
