Additional Information

Born in Mitcham in 1881, Charles was the youngest son of George and Ellen Philpott. George was a Nurseryman, and had his own business on the Broadway, Mitcham, employing 2 men and 2 boys. The couple’s other children were George Jnr aged 12, Alfred 9, Elizabeth 7, Lydia 5 and Henrietta aged 3, who sadly died later that year. Charles was baptised at St Peter and Paul Church, Mitcham.

The Census of 1891 sees the addition of Edward 8, and also the death of George Jnr. By 1901 only Charles and Lydia are living at the family home, and Charles is employed as a Market Gardener’s Assistant. 1911 shows no change as Charles is still employed as a Market Garden Assistant, possibly working in the family’s Floristry business.

Records show that during the First World War, Charles enlisted at Kingston, initially with the Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalion, with the Service No. 2660. He later transferred to the 4th Battalion, City of London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers).

Charles was killed in action on 5 September 1917, and is buried in the Duhallow ADS Cemetery, Belgium. He is also commemorated locally on the Mitcham War Memorial.

His father George received his last pay of £3.1.1 plus the War Gratuity of £3.00.
