Additional Information

Richard was one of nine children with older siblings Rosina and Eliza, John and James, and younger ones Elizabeth, William, Robert and George.
In 1901 the family, which then consisted of the seven older children, were living at 13 Princes Place, Southwark. His father John was a Packer and his mother’s name was Mary.
By 1911 they were living in a 2 room house at 96 Collinson Place. Robert and George had now been born but there were only five children now at home. Richard’s father’s occupation was shown as Tyre Smith and Richard himself, now 14, was an errand boy.
There is very little information about Richard’s military career available. He joined the 7th Battalion of the Bedford Regiment as a Private and served in the UK, dying in London on 20 November 1920 (Find-a-Grave gives the date as 20 October 1920 but military records and War Memorial at Streatham Park Cemetery state November).
