Additional Information
The 1881 census records the Hines family as living in Wimpole Mews, Marylebone. Henry Major Charles Hines was a Domestic Coachman and at that time he and his wife Mary had one son, also Henry but called Harry, and a daughter Augusta who sadly died in 1882.
Harry had been born in July 1878 in Tunbridge Wells.
Harry was 18 years old when he married Jessie Edith Bell in Christ Church, Southwark, on 25 June 1896, though his marriage certificate states he was 20.
By the 1901 census, Harry and Jessie were living in Southwark and he was working as a Book Edge Gilder. They had three children by now, Henry, Arthur and Edward.
Their address at the 1911 census was 75E Queens Building Southwark and their family had grown to include Jessie, Rose and Violet. This census shows Harry as a Printer’s Labourer though Rose’s baptism record from 1906 shows Harry as a Book Binder.
There is no detail of his military career available. He was ranked as a Pioneer in the Royal Engineers, regimental number 327793 and returned home on leave in 1916 as their last daughter, Blanche, was born in 1917.
He died on 22 February 1921 aged 43 and is commemorated on Screen Wall 9 in Streatham Park Cemetery.
