Additional Information

George was born in Wandsworth in 1890 and was baptised in St George the Martyr Church in Battersea on 3 July 1890. His father, William, was an engine driver and his mother was Ellen, sometimes known as Helen. He had a brother who was two years younger called Alfred.
George’s father died in 1894 and Ellen earned the money to keep the family together by making tarpaulins. They lived at 10 Ascalon Street in Battersea and from 26 July 1895, George attended Sleaford Street School.
By 1911, a William aged 23 was shown as a son to Ellen on the census. She was no longer working and George, now 21, was a Brewer’s Clerk and Alfred, aged 19, a Railway messenger. They lived at 80 Stewarts Street, Battersea. When George enlisted, he did not show William as a “full blood” relative, so it appears he was a half brother.
By the time he enlisted on 22 April 1916, George was still single and living at 8 Person Street Battersea. The records show that he was 5ft 4ins tall. He was posted to the 14th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment, but later records show he had transferred to the Labour Corps.
In 1918 he contracted influenza and died on 12 November 1918 in Bevan Hospital, Sandgate. He is commemorated in Streatham Park cemetery.
