Frank Matthias was the third son of Jessie Sherwin and Wilhelm Theodore Matthias. His father Wilhelm Theodore who was born in Rudesheim In Germany in 1859 arrived in England during the 1880s where he met and married Jessie Sherwin in Chelsea during the first quarter of 1889.
The 1891 Census reveals that Jessie and Wilhelm Theodore with their two eldest sons as residing at 488 King’s Road with the Pitcher family. At the time of the Census, Wilhelm Theodore’s occupation is that of a master baker.
Frank was born in 1893 was baptized at St John’s Church in January 1893, baptismal records reveal that the Matthias family still resided at 488 King’s Road in Chelsea and that Wilhelm was still employed as a baker.
The 1901 Census reveals that Jessie and Wilhelm had a total of 6 children and that the Matthias family still resided at 488 Kings Road in Chelsea, Wilhelm was still employed as a baker.
The 1911 Census reveals that Jessie and Wilhelm had been married for 22 years and that their 6 children were all alive and continued to reside at 488 Kings Road in Chelsea. Wilhelm continued to work as a baker with Jessie now assisting at the bakery. Eighteen-year-old Frank was now employed as an engineering apprentice.
The 1915 electoral register reveals that the Matthias family still resided at 488 Kings Road as a dwelling house in Chelsea.
Frank Matthias service record is not available through Ancestry, all that is known is that he enlisted in the Northamptonshire Regiment and was killed in action on the 18th of August 1916 and is remembered on the Thiepval War Memorial.
