Additional Information
Robert and Margaret Hurst ran a school in Suffolk and lived on the premises with their sons Robert, James, Bernard, Alexander, Charles, Thomas and Frederick.
Alexander was born in December 1862 in Cavendish Suffolk and on leaving school he trained as a piano tuner, a career he followed throughout his life.
He married Maude Thurston in 1899 and they had three children, Geraldine, Evelyn and Kenneth.
By the 1911 census, the family were living in Kensington.
Very little is known about Alexander’s military career. It appears that he enlisted in Lambeth and for a while served with the 24th Battalion of the London Regiment but the latter part of his service was as a Sergeant with the Royal Defence Corps.
He died at home on 26 February 1917 and is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery. His headstone is engraved with “The King of Love my Shepherd is”.
