Additional Information
James was born in Brixton in 1893. He was the youngest of Abraham and Eleanor’s three children, his older siblings being called Abraham and Edith. His father was a carman and in 1901 they were living in Crighton Street, Clapham but had moved to Pitcairn Road, also in Clapham, by the 1911 census. In 1911, 18 year old James was an Assisting Motorman on the Electric Railway.
James enlisted at the start of the war and was sent overseas after six months training, landing in France in March 1915. He took part in engagements at Hill 60, the Somme and Arras and was wounded in May 1917. The wound was severe and he was invalided home to hospital and was subsequently, unfortunately, killed in an enemy air raid.
He is buried in Streatham Park cemetery.
