Additional Information
Cyril William Renton was born in Brixton, London on 27 November 1872 and baptised in Christ Church, Brixton on 8 January 1873. His father, Edward, was an artist and engraver and later went on to be a fine art dealer. His mother’s name was Harriet and he had younger siblings Percy, Edward and Grace.
The family had moved to Hampstead by the 1881 census and were employing a servant.
Cyril married Mary Jane Nettleton on 22 December 1894 and his occupation was shown as Stock Broker. He qualified as a Solicitor a couple of years later.
By the 1901 census, he and Mary Jane were living in Crouch End with her father and brother and Cyril and Mary Jane’s son Lionel who was then 4 years old. They had a second son in 1907 who they called Esmonde Dudley. They were still in Crouch End in 1911 but had moved from Tivoli Road to Glasslyn Road, where they had a seven room house and employed two servants.
Cyril enlisted and was Commissioned on 8 June 1915. He was a member of the 20th Battalion of the London Regiment and served in France.
He may have been wounded, though there is no confirmation of that, but he died in the 4th General Hospital in Denmark Hill on 19 July 1917 and is buried in Streatham Park Cemetery. At the time of his death the family were living at 4 Pump Court, Temple, London.
His Regimental number has been deleted on the Grave listing for Streatham Park Cemetery and does not appear on the other military documents I have been able to find.
